A Fairytale in Birmingham - by Carl Bayliss, Lottery Manager

albert and dorothy lane 26-03-12 005 Albert passed away peacefully in hospital on Saturday 21st April 2012, just a couple of weeks after I met him. He was a real gentleman and I feel priviledged to have met him. Our sincere condolances to his widow Dorothy, daughter Janet and the family.

The best part of my job is when I telephone one of our players on Friday to tell them the good news that they have won £1,000.

Back in January 2012, I called Albert Lane who has been a TLC member since we started almost 15 years ago. His wife Dorothy answered the call and as soon as she knew it was TLC, put her husband on.

I had to tell Albert that he had not won our £1,000 weekly top prize – instead he had won our Rollover Jackpot of £1,750.

All our members are special and our winners’ decide to spend their winnings in different ways, but Albert and Dorothy’s story really touched us here at the TLC Lottery Office.

Albert (90) and Dorothy (88) met in an air raid shelter, instantly falling in love and in August of this year they will have been married for 70 years.albert and dorothy lane wedding 26-03-12 006

Like many couples of their generation, Albert and Dorothy have had some tough times.

Because of Albert’s health, they decided it was time to leave the home they have shared throughout those 70 years, and move into sheltered accommodation.

However, Albert had made all the furniture in their home and as it was built in and not suitable for their new flat, they would have to buy new.

Albert told me that his TLC winnings meant that they could buy all the new furniture they needed for the new flat.

I was privileged to meet Albert and Dorothy in their new home and they were so delighted with the flat and their new furniture.

When John White joined TLC Lottery just over 10 years ago, little did he know that before he retired he would sell 1 million Lottery Tickets, the proceeds being shared equally between Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice    and Focus Birmingham.

John is a familiar face at Supermarkets, Garden Centres and Shopping Malls in the West Midlands as well as a friendly voice on the phone. He has also knocked thousands of front doors and walked the streets of Birmingham for hundreds of miles each year in doing so.

“I've always enjoyed meeting and talking to people and despite difficult times I am still pleased to see how generous they are in supporting our Three Local Charities” says John

“John has worked tirelessly in all weather and conditions” added Lottery Manager Carl Bayliss, “but has been driven by the real difference the funds raised through TLC make to children, adults and their families throughout our region”

A keen golfer, John intends on improving his handicap after he retires on 31 January 2012.
